Toronto lawyers dedicated to helping people charged with impaired driving

I need to get my impaired charges dropped. What should I do?

You should contact a criminal defence lawyer to discuss and assess your case immediately after you receive a court date from the police. It is best to start working on your defence right away (before the first appearance court date). A lawyer will try to obtain the disclosure as soon as possible from the Crown and speak to them to try to convince them to drop the charges. Some cases may also resolve with a deal that allows the accused to drive again after a shorter period of time. These types of deals are time sensitive in Ontario.

Getting the Crown Attorney (prosecution) to drop the charges without going to trial is always the best case scenario. Some people need to drive for work related reasons and/or the prospect of getting a criminal record (conviction) would lead to them losing their job, their immigration status (have to return to their home country such as India, China, etc.), or their ability to travel to other countries such as the U.S. in the future.

People from all different backgrounds and ages get charged with impaired driving offences. It is an offence that many professionals and students with no prior history of breaking the law get charged with. Many people who call us looking for a lawyer to represent them to try to get the charges dropped have never even received a parking ticket before.

We understand your concerns and the potential threats to your livelihood, freedom, and future opportunities getting charged with over 80/impaired driving presents to you. If you are a first time accused with no prior record you likely fit the profile of most of the people who call us. They do not have a criminal record and therefore have a lot to lose.

It is not just about losing their driver’s licence, it is about having a criminal record show up to employers, schools, volunteer organizations, at the U.S. and other international borders, and myriad other ways in which it can harm a person’s life.
